Just under 800 researchers at The University of Leeds have been given the highest ratings of 5* and 5 in the survey of university research in the UK conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council of England, a government body. The outstanding departments with a 5* rating include Food Science, Italian, English, Town & Country Planning, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Grade 5 departments are Asian Studies, Biological Sciences, Business & Management, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Computer Science, Earth Science, Civil Engineering, General Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, History, Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Law, Professions allied to Medicine, Philosophy, Physics, Physiology, Psychology, Social Policy and Administration, and Statistics & Operational Research.
The results confirm Leeds' standing as a top-10 research university, at 7th place nationally, for the number of top scoring researchers and 8th for research power (referring to the quantity i.e. the volume of research submitted for assessment and the quality i.e. the proportion of research that have the highest ratings), out of 173 academic institutions in the UK.
The RAE ratings determine the level of funding that a department receives from the HEFCE.
