The University of Manchester 
The University of Manchester is one of the most respected and popular universities
in UK, with an academic staff of about 2000 and a student population of some
22600, comprising of 18600 full-time and 4000 part-time students from around
the UK and across the world.
Manchester has a strong tradition of "firsts". It was the first UK's
great civic universities; being founded in 1851. It was also in Manchester that
Rutherford first split the atom, and where the modern computer was invented
in 1948.
The University ranks as one of the top-10 research universities in the UK; according
to in the latest Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the British Government
in 2001. Thirty-seven subjects across a wide variety of study scored a top 5
to 5* rating, reaffirming Manchester's position as a university of national
and international research standing.
The twelve RAE 5*-rated departments are: Pre-Clinical Studies; Pharmacy; Biological
Science; Computer Science; Metallurgy & Materials; Sociology; Accountancy;
French; German, Dutch & Scandinavian Languages; Liberian & Latin American
Languages; Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies; and Music.

The University is also home to The John Rylands University Library; the third
largest university in the UK; with more than 3.5 million volumes as well as
state-of-the-art information services readily accessible through PCs and terminals
situated campus-wide in the library and departments.
