Founded
during the period of university expansion in the early 1960s, The University
of York has distinguished itself as a premier university with a national and
international reputation for the quality of its courses and its research and
can reliably be found in the top ten of most measurements of quality.
York is consistently one of Britain's top universities with an international
reputation for quality in research and teaching. York staffs are at the forefront
of research in their subjects across a wide range of arts, science and social
sciences. In the latest 2001 Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the British
Government, 84% of York's departments came up top by being rated 4, 5 and 5*.
